Transportation Supervisor

General Responsibilities

Plans, directs, coordinates and oversees all functions pertaining to the operation of the division transportation department.  This includes personnel and procedures. The prime concern is safe, efficient, economical transportation of students between home and school on a regular schedule, and between other destinations within or outside the division boundaries on a special scheduling basis.

 

Duties

  1. Establish all regular bus routes, schedules and stops. Develop route maps for drivers, schools, etc. as appropriate.
  2. Oversee accuracy of student data system for the purposes of maintaining correct parental contact information for transportation department.
  3. Oversee development of crises planning and crises communication for the transportation department.
  4. Serve as point of contact for bus and car drivers, parents, and schools for the purposes of maintaining student discipline and human resources concerns.
  5. Work collaboratively with transportation mechanics and report directly to the Executive Director of Facilities and Transportation.
  6. Supervise bus and car drivers and conduct yearly evaluations for bus and car drivers.
  7. Coordinate student transportation activities with school officials, department heads and other interested groups or individuals.
  8. Participate along with school officials in parent/student conferences in an effort to resolve or prevent misconduct and unsafe conditions, which involve the transportation system.
  9. Collect data and develop all required school bus transportation oriented reports and insures their submission on a timely basis.
  10. Insure compliance with the codes and pertinent policies regarding training, licensing, registration, and operational permits.
  11. Arranges for special transportation for summer school and other special needs circumstances.
  12. Provides for safety at all bus stops.
  13. Provides instruction in behavior management of all students.
  14. Provides instruction in management of special needs students.
  15. Provides for a pool of adequately trained and informed substitute bus drivers.
  16. Conducts continuing bus driver training and traffic safety program.
  17. Establish and maintain good public relations program.
  18. Evaluate all elements of transportation program on continuing basis.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Candidate must possess a high school diploma or GED.   New Transportation directors/supervisors employed by the school division shall complete the “train the trainer” class conducted by the Virginia Department of Education within one year after being employed in this position.  Experience in pupil transportation is preferred. Experience or responsibilities in the following areas is preferred:

-Supervision of personnel                  - Routing and scheduling

-Bus driver training                             - Accident investigation

-Cost accounting                                 - Recordkeeping

 

 

Salary Range:  Commensurate with experience
